IWD 2025: A Q&A with Women of Hitachi

By Nicola Woods

Every year at Hitachi we lean into Women’s History Month to amplify and celebrate the achievements of our great female colleagues and leaders. Through a series of internal and external web events, meet-ups, and social engagements, we reflect on our progress and reaffirm our commitment to being a more inclusive company.

As research shows, fostering a culture of empowerment isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s a strategic advantage. This year, in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, we sat down with members of our Employee Resource Group (ERG), Women of Hitachi, for their insights on inclusivity and empowerment. Joining us for this Q&A session were Roxanne Hughes, Senior Manager of Sales Operations at Hitachi Digital Services; Lynda Brown, Director of Talent Acquisition, at Hitachi Digital; and Claire Court, Program Manager, EMEA, at Hitachi Vantara. The following are excerpts from the discussion:

Topic 1. The Power of Recognition

Celebrating women’s accomplishments is more than a reflection on the past— it’s a catalyst for future progress.

Lynda Brown, Hitachi Digital.

Lynda Brown: “Not too long ago, women had limited representation in workplaces and leadership roles. While there is still work to be done, it’s important to recognize those who paved the way before us, often at great personal risk, for shaping the opportunities we have today. By celebrating these milestones, we inspire others to lead, mentor, and break new ground, ensuring the path forward becomes even wider for those who follow.”

Roxanne Hughes: “By spotlighting women’s contributions, we spark dialogue, drive action, and keep gender equality at the forefront, ensuring we continue building a workplace where women can thrive and advance. It builds a sense of unity, reminds us of the importance of a diverse workplace, and ensures that the conversation around gender equality continues.”

Claire Court: “When I joined Hitachi, I was one of just three women in a team of over 40 men. Today, the shift is undeniable — women are taking up more leadership roles and contributing across all business units. But this didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of years of effort in hiring, supporting, and championing women. That’s why celebrating progress is so important — it ensures we continue to attract and retain top female talent.”

Topic 2. Building an Inclusive Workplace

Hitachi’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is woven into the very fabric of our culture. Initiatives like Women of Hitachi and our Employee Resource Groups (ERG), play a pivotal role in creating a more inclusive environment.

Roxanne Hughes, Hitachi Digital Services.

Lynda Brown: “Hitachi fosters a respectful culture that values people,” says Lynda. “The Women of Hitachi ERG is a great example of how inclusivity is championed here. It’s not just a women’s initiative—it’s a collective effort, with participation from both men and women, demonstrating that diversity and inclusion are responsibilities we all share.”

Claire Court: “Early in my career, I commuted four hours a day, five days a week. As I progressed and started a family, Hitachi’s flexible work policies allowed me to continue growing professionally while balancing personal responsibilities. This support made all the difference in my ability to thrive.”

Topic 3. Women uplifting Women

One of the most powerful ways to accelerate change is through mentorship and advocacy. Women supporting women is a force multiplier, creating a ripple effect that leads to meaningful progress.

Claire Court: “I was inspired by a colleague early in my Hitachi journey, who was a brilliant technical consultant and manager, despite not attending university. Hitachi recognized her potential and invested in her development, supporting her journey to become a Chartered Manager Fellow and complete an Executive MBA. Her story proves that talent comes in many forms, and when companies invest in women, they create a stronger, more capable workforce.”

Roxanne Hughes: “Our ERG lead (in the U.K.) creates a welcoming and open environment, encouraging committee members to take ownership of initiatives they are passionate about. Her mentorship led me to organize several successful charity team events, proving that when women uplift each other, the whole workplace benefits.”

Topic 4. Making an Impact on International Women’s Day

Claire Court, Hitachi Vantara.

This year, we’ll be coming together with our colleagues, both women and men, to celebrate progress and accelerate action by supporting nonprofit organizations that empower women and girls in the communities we serve.

Claire Court: “I’ll be joining the Women of Hitachi for a Charity Afternoon Tea in London, where we’ll be assembling hampers for women in hostels and refuges. It’s a small way to make a meaningful impact and show solidarity with those who need support.

Lynda Brown: “By uplifting one another, fostering an inclusive environment, and ensuring opportunities for all, we can shape a future where every woman has the space to thrive.”

On this International Women’s Day, let’s continue accelerating the action together. With more than 67,000 female employees, 22.8% of our workforce, Hitachi is committed to continuing to build a strong and inclusive workplace.

Planned Activities

In recognition of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Hitachi employees worldwide will take part in activities that celebrate, support, and uplift women, including:
